The Price is Right - 6/12/11 Episode

I apologize I haven't blogged the last two episodes of The Price is Right - a few things have come up recently. Going forward, I'll still be doing my best to blog about every episode, but in occasional cases that may not be possible.

Alright, on to today's show. It was a day for both the young and the old. Let's start with the introduction of Drew Carey, which included Connor, the son of the host's ex-fiancee:

(According to those who report on such matters, Carey's motivation for his recent weight loss was to keep up with Connor as he got older, and that he was planning to remain a part of Connor's life after the couple split in January.)

And then we had Margaret playing "Clock Game" for a trip to St. Thomas:

Ohhhh booooy

To recap, after being told the price of the first item is lower than $900, Margaret proceeds to spend 15 seconds - that's half the time allotted for the game - and 17 (I think) guesses that are higher than $900. I half expected Drew to throw in a "lower than $900" reminder somewhere in there, as Margaret was clearly lost, but I guess that's against the rules of hosting.

Then, she guesses $850, goes back to $800 again, then goes back to $850 again. Concentrate!

Pricing game struggles
Margaret was the last contestant in an 0-for-6 clanger of a day in pricing games.

We started with "One Away," with Gwendolyn getting an assist from Connor:

Shannon played well enough, and got four honks from the "Mighty Sound Effects Lady" in her first turn. She didn't make the right change in her second turn, however, and lost her chance at a Ford Fiesta. Connor was unhappy with that turn of events.

Kurt misfired on "One Wrong Price," followed by Larry crashing out of "The Grand Game" after reasonably guessing that a jar of cinnamon sticks was less than $5. It was $6.19, and that was that.

After Viviana guess way too high on a dining room in "Push Over," Margaret (different one from above) played "Secret X" for a Scion XP. This game is practically never played for a car, so of course today would be the day they snuck the "X" in the bottom row.

And then this was followed by the second Margaret's "Clock Game" disaster.

Wheel strategy
To spin again, or not to spin again?

Both of today's Showcase Showdowns featured interesting strategical decisions. In the first round, Larry, spinning second, got a 60-cent spin that was good enough to beat Shannon, the first spinner. With Kurt behind him, though, Larry had a decision to make. He kept the 60 cents - I would have, too - only for Kurt to go 45-30-75.

In the second round, Viviana led off with a 55-cent spin. The odds are slightly against you in terms of the second spin taking you over, but with two contestants still to go, you pretty much have to do it. Viviana did and spun a 25 to get to 80, only for "Secret X" Margaret to get a 95.

Random guests
So, some guy was on stage today to help introduce an electric guitar as an item up for bids.

I say "some guy" because Drew said his name, which I couldn't quite make out, and then nothing else about who he is. According to the episode recap on Golden Road, he is Bashan Ashwani. I know fuck-all about music, so I figured he must be in a band or something. Well, if he is, it's not a very popular band: a Google search for Bashan Ashwani came up empty. Throwing in the word "guitar" and "guitarist" did not help.

So, as far as I or any other viewer can tell, he really is just "some guy." That's rather baffling, considering this is what the models are paid to do. Where was Rockin' Amber here?

If you're going to have random guests on the show, at least explain who they are, as was done when Kendra Scott showed off her own line of jewelry that was up for bids in the fifth round.

Bidders' row struggles
Spare a thought for Carrera, a "first four" contestant who never got off bidders' row.

Carrera didn't do anything overwhelmingly foolish - it just wasn't her day.

And, finally...
Here's more Connor, first asking George Gray to introduce the next prize...

...and then letting loose right before the second Showcase Showdown.
