The Price is Right - 5/4/12 Episode

I'm not quite as obsessed with Plinko as many other The Price is Right fans are, but it can sometimes make for riveting television. The exultation of a $10,000 chip, matched by the utter despair of the $0 chip. Fortunes hang in the balance and can change in a second.

Today, Kyong's playing of Plinko gave me goosebumps.

That's pretty damn good.

Kyong earned her three extra Plinko chips with some sound pricing strategy (including the generally accurate principle that if they give you a '0' for the second number as an option, take it. She did twice, and won a chip both times).

Kyong's highlight reel wasn't over. At the wheel, Mary has just gotten a dollar. Here's Kyong trying to match it:

Mary got an 85 in the spin-off, and Kyong was one peg away from matching it and creating the most epic spin-off in recent times. It didn't happen, but $22,000 in cash isn't a bad day on The Price is Right.

The Plinko and wheel moments saved an otherwise fairly mundane show. There were a few highlights and lowlights, though.

Bidders' row FAIL
Ladies and gentlemen, let's say you're convinced the item up for bid is $900. The three bids before you were $775, $800 and $1,200. What do you bid?

The answer, of course, is $801. Jeffrey (below, second from right) stuck with $900, though...

...and remained on bidders' row after the actual retail price was revealed to be $822. Why this simple concept remains hard for so many people, I'll never understand.

And here's some more dodgy bidding on a 13-piece beach set:

Mary (far right) was first to bid, and won. Note to potential The Price is Right contestants of the future: the show doesn't do sub-$500 prizes. This should have been a win for Jeffrey, too.

Jeffrey and Chantae (second from left) were both "first four" contestants to never make it on stage. Chantae showed some bidding smarts and retail knowledge (she was a combined $6 over on the first two items up for bids), but had some bad luck.

Stage prop malfunction
What's a model to do when those display doors just won't open?

Top marks to Amber for her quick recovery to show off the computer. Even with George Gray cackling at her (at the 0:11 mark).

Andrew gets a little ahead of himself
We had quite an entrance from Andrew prior to the second round on bidders' row:

Andrew quickly got it together and won the ensuing round of bidding, anyway, then took home a scooter, washer/dryer and 51-inch HD television on "Easy as 1-2-3."

On the lineup of games
* The biggest reason today's episode was fairly "meh" otherwise was the lineup of games. We started with "Coming or Going," which is one of those 50-50 games that I know The Price is Right needs to do to keep things on schedule, but it's not all that exciting. This was followed by "Easy as 1-2-3," "Pass the Buck" and "The Balance Game" - the first and third being decidedly average, and the second becoming average after Shelley couldn't win an extra turn. I would've preferred to see a grocery game (like "Bullseye" or the aptly named "Grocery Game") somewhere in there to get a little more strategy and intrigue in the lineup.

Which brings me to "Lucky Seven," today's fifth game. This game should be way more exciting than it generally is. Maureen didn't play it terribly, but didn't even make it to the fifth number. I'm convinced The Price is Right just doesn't want people to win this game.
